CHECKING THE STARTER CIRCUIT

If the starter fails to "crank" the engine read the following procedure:

1. No noise from the starter when the ignition switch is engaged.

A. Ignition switch is bad or lock cylinder is worn.

B. ('74 early '75) Under the passenger seat the interlock relay is bad.

C. Battery is Dead.

D. Solenoid lead is loose or disconnected from the solenoid.

E. Starter is bad.

2. Starter clicks when ignition switch is sprung to the "start" position

A. Low battery voltage.

B. Voltage drop from switch to starter (Install Bosch hot start kit).

C. Transmission tail cover to trunk floor ground is bad, loose or disconnected.

D. Battery positive and or negative leads are loose, bad, or corroded.

E. Starter is defective

3. Starter violently clunks when ignition switch is engaged.

A. Engine is locked or flywheel end play is improper.

4. Starter grinds when ignition switch is engaged.

A. Flywheel teeth are worn or flywheel is loose.

B. Starter is not fully engaging (starter is bad).

5. Starter turns slowly when ignition switch is engaged.

A. Battery voltage is low or battery is weak.

B. Rear transmission cover ground strap to bottom of trunk floor is bad, loose or disconnected (this problem occurs especially after A clutch job!).

C. Battery positive or negative cables loose or corroded.

D. Starter is worn.

6. Starter fails to engage only when car is hot.

A. Voltage drop to starter (Install Bosch hot start kit).

B. Starter is defective.

C. Rear transmission ground strap to body is bad, loose or disconnected.

D. Low battery voltage due to poor charging.
