  • Long 15mm Wrench

*Oil cooler seals can be replaced with the engine in the car.

The following instructions will make it easy for you:
First, elevate the car and position it on jack stands. Remove all right side heater parts except for the heat exchanger (on ‘75 - ’76 model, remove the right heat exchanger). Remove the oil filter and if equipped, the air conditioning compressor belt and tensioner pulley. Remove the outboard oil cooler mount from the engine. Using a long 10mm wrench, move the two outboard oil cooler securing nuts and washers. Save the nuts and washers for reinstallation.

With a quarter inch ratchet and 10mm socket, loosen the inner securing nut and remove the nut and washer by hand (otherwise the ratchet will become stuck). Slide the oil cooler towards the front of the 914 and remove the old seals with a screwdriver. Allow the oil to drip until it stops and then clean the sealing area with Break Cleaner spray. Use a seal removal tool that resembles the numeral “1” to install the new seals (it is available at any auto parts house). However, if not available, a long screwdriver with the seal glued on top like a lifesaver will suffice. Lightly coat the exterior oil seal surfaces (but no the seal bore!) with heavy grease or silicone gasket material and put some extra grease on the top of your installation tool.

Position the seal on the tool and slide the seal into it’s necessary location beginning with the top seal. Another technique according to one of our 914 friends, is to place the outer shoulder of the seal in the saddle of a long 15mm open end wrench. This allows you to push the opposite shoulder well into position and still slide the wrench downward leaving the seal in place. Make sure the seals stay seated! Reinstall the oil cooler and filter, then test run the engine to assure it is leak free. Be sure to check and correct the engine oil level after the test run. Reassemble all heater parts, the exhaust and air conditioning parts.

Congratulations! You have solved the leaking oil cooler seals!
