Extreme Porsche 914 Makeover
by Greg Treadway

1976 Porsche 914 2.0 (yes, all 1976s are 2.0!!). This car came to Automobile Atlanta as a trade in. When I first saw it, from afar, I thought immediately this was a Porsche that any 914 enthusiast would love to own. Sure the car has some problems, but that is standard in most of the 914s that we see nowadays. The restoration of 914s is so popular, virtually any car is a good purchase. The car has decent bones and all 914s are worth saving.

Chris Camut, wise beyond his young years, traded us this weathered plain jane white 914, $14,000 and the opportunity to save a piece of Porsche history for an electrically beautiful 1973 Alaska Blue 2.0. He wasn't quite sure that he wanted to get into this white 914 restoration, so he opted for a totally finished car. Once the car was orphaned though, I became its charge.

Potential? This car has it all, and in Dr. 914's opinion was perfect for a minor restoration. My opinion? TIME FOR AN EXTREME MAKEOVER!! Over the next couple of months you will see this car go from a restoration candidate to a 21st century 914.

As the Marketing Director of Automobile Atlanta, I have a great respect for the ultra originality that many 914 owners, including Dr. 914 show for these cars. I am also an active member of Generation X and thus a 914 visionary. To me, wild flares, radical interiors, 21st century gauges and intense wheel/tire packages were dancing in my head while the muted voice of Dr. 914 and his "Retro Concept Car" circa 1990 quickly faded away. (see http://autoatlanta.com/Life/retroarticle.html) Finally he and I made a deal (mostly with him dragging and kicking) to burst into the 21st century with this car we all love.

WARNING!! If you are a follower of Dr. 914's philosophy about concours restoration and the preservation of class at the Porsche events, DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ARTICLE!! Dr. 914, like Pontius Pilate, has washed his hands of this one. However, if you want to have a tremendous amount of fun (or you think the Doctor is nutty or just want to watch him squirm) buckle up and prepare for the ride!!

Epilogue:
Now it is over!!

It has been a long journey. We started this 914 trying to show the typical weekend project. Some of our vendors got involved coming up with new products and ideas and everyone in our shop (except for the doctor) became enamoured with the Extreme. We all threw our time and energy and some of us threw our money at the car. What we ended up with is a car that any Father/Son team can reproduce on the weekends. The Extreme is now a 1976 GT with a 916 interior and 2005 EFI engine management system. The dyno tests are next. Please email me with any questions you may have to greg@autoatlanta.com
